The Jijak Foundation is proud to announce that, in collaboration with the Intertribal Agricultural Council, we will be hosting the 2016 Great Lakes Intertribal Food Summit, April 21 -24.  This incredible four day conference and community event will bring together native food producers, top chefs, community programs, indigenous leaders in sustainability and agriculture, elders and youth around the central theme of revitalizing healthy, sustainable and culturally vibrant Native American foods and food systems  in the Great Lakes Region.   

Event Highlights

Culinary and Traditional Food Focus

  •  Meals featuring traditional and native produced ingredients prepared by leading Native American chefs
  • Small hands-on, indoor and outdoor workshops on traditional cooking knowledge and food preparation
  • Native foods market showcasing native producers, products and indigenous arts 

Tribal Programs and Producers Conference (Thursday & Friday)

  • Presentations and speakers on sustainability, food security, production practices, traditional knowledge and more
  • Opportunities to work directly with with top native chefs and to connect to native producers
  • Break out sessions and focus groups on seed banks/seed saving, maple sugaring, soil conservation and much more

Intertribal Foods Festival (Saturday & Sunday)

  • Small group workshops, demonstrations and food tasting stations
  • Interactive activities for all ages
  • Opportunities to learn, explore and collaborate on issues of food sovereignty 

Youth Track; Engaging our Next Generation of Native Farmers, Foragers and Chefs

  • Focus on engaging with elders and tradition bearers to learn cultural skills and practices
  • Reconnecting with the land through activities such as gathering wild foods and outdoor cooking
